Woman Convicted of Killing Girlfriend Denied Appeal

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A woman convicted in the stabbing death of her former friend has been denied a last chance appeal to the country’s final court. 

In 2021,  Dervinique Edwards was sentenced to 28 years’ imprisonment  in the murder of 19-year-old Breanna Mackey.

With deductions for time spent on remand,  Evans’  sentence was reduced to 25 years and two months.

Her appeals against conviction and sentence were rejected by the Court of Appeal in 2022.

Now, the Privy Council has denied her bid for a final appeal saying that no miscarriage of justice  occurred in the case.

Mackey was walking along Key West Street when she was cut off by a car. Edwards and four other young women emerged from the vehicle and ganged Mackey in a row over a broken phone January 25, 2018.Edwards did not inflict the fatal stab wounds, but she and others kicked and pelted Mackey with rocks and stones during the fatal assault.
