NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The issue of marital rape taking center stage at the National Ecumenical Church Service Sunday as one clergyman said people can lie. He also slammed same-sex unions during his fiery comments.

A prominent clergyman is hitting out at efforts to criminalize marital rape saying not everyone tells the truth.

Speaking at a National Ecumenical Service Sunday, Evangelist Rex Major questioned how spouses would prove marital rape, adding that some women would use rape as a tool to end their marriage.

His comments come after Social Services Minister Obie Wilchcombe revealed government is still in talks with the church about some of the wording in the bill.

The service held at Evangelistic Temple on Collins Avenue is just one of many events leading up to the 50th independence.

Major doubled down cautioning the country to tread lightly on the issue.

Major also spoke out against same-sex unions.

His comments sparked applause from some in the crowd.
