NASSAU , BAHAMAS – The Minister of Works is provided updates on long-stalled road projects, plans to improve traffic flow across New Providence, and repairs to a Family Island bridge that serves as a lifeline for residents.

The Ministry of Works and Family Island Affairs has been ramping up its road paving and city infrastructure initiatives.

But while some projects are moving forward, others have faced longstanding delays.

One of them is the Gladstone Road Improvement Project.

In 2023, the project was delayed by land acquisition issues and squatting along the Gladstone Road corridor.

Then, in 2024, further delays followed after a large business in the area requested additional traffic management studies.

Earlier this year, Works Minister Clay Sweeting told reporters that preparatory work was underway.

So, what progress has been made since then?

“We finished all the work that needed to be done with that. We just have to put it out for an RFP, so that’ll be along with the other major road improvement projects in the Ministry of Works.”

And the Gladstone Road project is not the only major road improvement on the ministry’s radar.

“We’ve completed an overall New Providence road paving scheme that should open up traffic across New Providence. We are looking at pricing and putting that in different phases, and I’ll table that in the House in a few months. You can see the work that’s been done in the background for the last year and a half.”

But road improvements are only part of the ministry’s infrastructure agenda.

Attention is also turning to Andros, where the bridge in Fresh Creek was closed this summer because of deteriorating conditions.

The closure has raised concerns about access and connectivity for residents who rely on the bridge.

“We anticipate that the structural beam that has been shipped should be delivered next week. Once it’s here, they’ll be able to reinforce underneath the concrete bridge at Fresh Creek, and then it shouldn’t take that long to complete that work.”

With major road projects still in the pipeline and bridge repairs expected in Andros, residents will be watching closely to see how quickly these plans translate into completed works.
