NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The minister of works is addressing flooding in Exuma after heavy rainfall a few weeks ago. He admits their usual measures for tackling the issue are now insufficient.

Works and Utilities Minister Alfred Sears says the amount of rainfall on the island of Exuma a few weeks ago was unprecedented.

The tragic situation forced residents to stay in their homes as their yards, cars and homes were flooded.

The works minister says Exuma has a sensitive ecosystem.

To assist with those issues, he says pumps were mobilized and that effort has been going on for weeks.

Sears says he and his team are reviewing flood mitigation measures to better address the reality of global warming and rising sea levels.
