NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The fire at Over Yonder Cay leaving millions in damage, according to the Deputy Prime Minister and Exuma MP Chester Cooper, who is anticipating a strong bounce back.

Cooper also telling reporters this will be a major hit to employment on the island.

Cooper says the fire at the private boutique hotel with up to $10m in damage.

Cooper says the fire started in the engine room, but he expects the private resort to bounce back stronger than before.

There were no reports of injuries and Cooper says all employees are well.

There were reportedly fewer than 10 guests on the cay at the time of the fire.

The private hotel employs around 40 people. Cooper says this will be a significant hit to employment.

Over Yonder Cay is considered a model for renewable energy in The Bahamas.

Police say shortly before 8pm on Monday, officers were notified of the blaze which reportedly destroyed the engineering building.

The cay is located six miles north of Staniel Cay, Exuma.
