ACKLINS, BAHAMAS – Taino Island Gardens’ collection in Acklins takes visitors on a journey through time, from Clorox bottles to vintage Pepsi, it’s a real blast from the past! 

And it’s owner and steward Anita Collie Verdecia is not stopping there. 

After our warm welcome, we had the pleasure of getting up close to her preservation of mother nature’s plants which we’ll showcase in our next feature. But that’s not all. 

In the conservatory, we were introduced to an array of artifacts that vividly tell the captivating story of Acklins and all the inhabited islands of The Bahamas.

A stark departure from the packaging we’re accustomed to today including familiar items like these.

And she says she’s collecting more to showcase in a future museum. 

But it’s not just about the artifacts Anita’s got stories to tell too.  Ever heard of hot shot? It’s how she says our ancestors kept mosquitoes at bay.

And Anita is still holding on to her mother’s old sewing machine from way back when a real piece of history.

But it’s not all about sewing Anita says her family played a vital role in their community, from clothing to cooking.

And speaking of food, she shared some fascinating insights into the trade between Haiti and The Bahamas. 

But it’s not just about the past Anita says she believes in sharing the story of Acklins for future generations.

And something we certainly won’t soon forget! It’s a stunning testament to our history meticulously preserved by Anita, whose pride in Acklins only grows stronger with time and she says she’s eager to welcome you with the same warmth she showed us.
