NASSAU, BAHAMAS – With a new U.S. President elected this week, many are questioning if efforts to address key issues will be derailed.

One big issue is climate change. Regional leaders have been vocal on the global stage, pushing for climate justice and an operational loss in damage fund.

But global climate experts warn a Donald Trump term poses a grave threat to the fight.

But Prime Minister Philip Davis says he doesn’t believe trump’s victory will impact the region’s efforts.

“He speaks for his country and I don’t blame all this on him, don’t forget now, the meetings of the parties which are the leaders of the work have been going on for 29 years and he has only been around for the last 10 years and we’re still no further ahead than we were 29 years ago,” the prime minister said.

“So what happens next will not just depend on what he does or doesn’t do because nothing much has been happening even when he wasn’t there.”

This isn’t the only issue of concern. Reuters is reporting that Donald Trump is expected to mobilize agencies across the U.S. Government to help him deport record numbers of immigrants.

With our own immigration challenges, we asked the prime minister how this could possibly impact us in The Bahamas.

“If Bahamians are there and they are not there properly and coming back home, they’re coming back home,” Prime Minister Davis said.

“How will that impact us? They’re entitled to be home and so they will be coming back home.”
