NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A new Road Traffic law requires vehicle owners to have an insurance policy no older than six months when licensing their vehicles.

Additionally, policies must now be renewed in the same month as the vehicle owner’s birth month.

However, not everyone is enthusiastic, some motorists say the new rules could create more confusion and inconvenience.

Motorists found with unlicensed or uninsured vehicles could face impoundment, and it won’t come cheap. A $300 fee must be paid to retrieve an impounded vehicle.

The law also gives police the authority to sell unclaimed vehicles after one year to cover impoundment costs.

This move is intended to reduce the number of uninsured cars on the streets and improve road safety.

Despite the concerns, the government says the changes are necessary to protect law-abiding drivers from the financial burden of accidents caused by uninsured motorists.
