AFGHANISTAN – In Afghanistan, rescuers are racing against time after a powerful 6.0 earthquake killed more than 800 people and injured at least 1,800 others.

Many remain trapped in the rubble of their homes in remote mountain villages near the Pakistan border.

Blocked roads and rugged terrain have made it difficult to reach survivors, forcing helicopters to airlift hundreds of people to hospitals already overwhelmed.

The Taliban government is appealing for international help, with the U.N., U.K., India, China, and Switzerland all pledging emergency aid.

The disaster comes as Afghanistan faces severe drought and widespread hunger, making recovery even more difficult.
