NASSAU, BAHAMAS – As the war in Ukraine continues, most news coverage has centered on the refugee crisis. Bahamian basketball phenomenon Jonquel Jones was playing in Russia at the time the war started.

She sits down with our Sasha Lightbourne to share her story.



That’s Bahamian basketball phenomenon and the reigning most valuable player in the WNBA, Jonquel Jones speaking about getting out of Russia once the invasion of Ukraine began.

Jones says one of the hardest things for her was reassuring her family that she was okay.

The 6’7″ Bahamian basketball star recalls getting out of Russia.

At one point Jones says many countries closed their airspace to flights from Russia, leaving only three options for her and some of her teammates – going through Turkey, Dubai, or China.
