NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Bahamas National Trust manages 33 national parks across the country, each playing a vital role in protecting the environment and educating the public.

Elijah Sands – Senior Communication Officer, Bahamas National Trust
“The Bahamas is one of the most biodiverse regions in the West Indies. And so we’re privileged to have such a variety of biodiversity that we can experience, that we can explore, and it’s, it’s our priority almost, that we should be trying to protect this biodiversity.”

But that biodiversity is increasingly under threat, especially from the growing impacts of climate change.

Rising sea levels, stronger storms, and warmer temperatures are taking a serious toll on ecosystems across the islands.

Elijah Sands – Senior Communication Officer, Bahamas National Trust
“Hurricanes, even though they are natural disasters, those idiosyncratic events, once they impact an island, they can have tremendous negative impacts on biodiversity.
So it can destroy ecosystems, it can wipe out entire species, and even the aftereffects, once ecosystems are destroyed, continue to negatively impact these areas.”

So, what can we do?

The Bahamas National Trust says it all starts with getting involved.

Paige Cartwright – Science Officer, Bahamas National Trust
“Visit a national park to experience biodiversity firsthand. They can also support conservation efforts and organizations that work to pro, protect biodiversity in The Bahamas.”
