CHINA – Funeral homes across China’s COVID-hit capital Beijing, a city of 22 million, are scrambling to keep up with calls for funeral and cremation services.

The backup is blamed on workers and drivers calling in sick because of positive COVID-19 tests.

China has recorded its highest number of daily covid cases since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The rise in cases comes despite China’s stringent measures designed to eliminate the virus.

Chinese officials are reporting outbreaks in several major cities including the capital Beijing.

Wednesday saw more than 31,000 cases recorded compared with an April peak of 28,000.

The numbers are still tiny for a country of 1.4 billion people.

There have been over 5,200 recorded deaths since the pandemic began.
