THE AMERICAS – A rare total lunar eclipse turned the full moon a dusky red early Friday enchanting skywatchers across much of North and South America.

The eclipse’s totality lasted 66 minutes, as the moon passed through earth’s shadow, according to NASA.

The partial eclipse, occurring before and after the main event, extended the spectacle for hours.

Known as a “Blood moon,” the phenomenon occurs when sunlight is bent by earth’s atmosphere, casting a reddish hue over the moon.

The eclipse was also visible in parts of Africa, Europe, Australia, and Japan.
