NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The power company chief is promoting a 60-megawatt solar field on New Providence by 2023 as a major cost saver for Bahamas Power and Light. This is as Works Minister Alfred Sears sounds the alarm in Parliament about the power company’s dire financial straits.

The cost-saving news comes as the government announced a November price hike which Sears defended in Parliament saying the cost being passed on to consumers keeps the power company from falling off a financial cliff.

As for the solar field, BPL Chief Executive Officer Shevonn Cambridge says, it will save the company some 23 million dollars in annual fuel costs.

Prime Minister Philip Davis announced the solar field back in June, saying it will help reduce the country’s reliance on fossil fuels.
