GUYANA – Caribbean leaders convened with Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry on Sunday to address the ongoing gang violence plaguing Haiti.

The discussions taking place ahead of 46th regular meeting of Caricom heads of government meeting in Guyana, with Haiti dominating the agenda.

The talks are said to focus on CARICOM’s contributions to a U.N.-backed deployment of Kenyan police officers to combat gang violence.

Several nations have pledged support for this mission, but it faces challenges due to a court order.

However in an interview with the Associated Press, Foreign Affairs Minister Fred Mitchell highlighted Henry’s leadership remains a major obstacle to progress, as opposition groups in Haiti oppose his tenure.

Mitchell emphasized the necessity of a political solution, acknowledging the international community’s concerns about Haiti’s governance should Henry step down or be removed.
