When I got the news, I was making breakfast for them, and I just, I just started screaming. Like, I couldn’t understand.

A summer vacation to Florida turned into a nightmare for the family of Codie Stuart Lightfoot, a mother of four, killed in a traffic accident on Eleuthera early Sunday morning.

Police say it happened just after 7 a.m. on Queen’s Highway.

Her vehicle struck a tree, and officers found her unresponsive outside the car. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her death marks the country’s 36th traffic fatality for the year.

Codie didn’t join her family on the trip. Instead, she stayed behind to work and prepare her girls for the upcoming school year.

She worked two jobs to provide for her daughters, who are now just 9, 7, 5, and 2 years old.

Her mother, Joycaster, says she’s still struggling to comprehend it all.

Whenever the girls ask about their mom now on vacation, I just distract them and try to find another theme park for us to go to. And when I feel like I can’t take it, I lock myself up in the room and just start crying. ‘Cause I don’t want them to see me crying, but it’s very hard.

Codie was known as a loving mother, a devoted church member, and a joyful spirit in her community.

Her family says she raised her girls on the same foundation of faith and love that shaped her own life—and that legacy is what they’re holding on to.

Church members have already stepped in to provide grief counseling and support for the family.

Codie’s dream was to be the best mother possible to them. She always said that, you know, she just wanted to get a good education, go to school, get the same foundation she had as a child.

Four little girls will now return home to a world that’s been changed forever.

Their mother… their provider… their comfort, their everything… is gone.

But her family says they’ll do all they can to carry her love forward.
