NASSAU, BAHAMAS – More than a year after the Christopher Columbus statue was damaged during a sledge hammer attack, what remained of the statue was removed from Government House over the weekend. While the Antiquities, Monuments and Museum Corporation has oversight over most monuments across the country, in this case, the situation was a little different due to the fact that the statue was placed on Government House.

It was that video that went viral showing a man knocking the leg off of the Christopher Columbus statue outside Government House in October of 2021.

The man responsible for the act was arrested by police and later charged.

The video started a wide discussion across the country as to whether or not the statue should remain.

Communications Director in the Office of the Prime Minister Latrae Rahming confirming that the statue was removed on Sunday. He says there was a combined effort to ensure that the structure was removed safely.

As for what is next for the statue? Rahming says that will be a decision for the Cabinet of The Bahamas to make.
