NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A Miss Bahamas contestant is opening up about how the loss of a loved one prepared her for the national pageant stage.

Miss Bahamas Universe contestant 22-year-old Jael Peters’ life changed back on September 27th, 2015.

Waking up on a Sunday morning to wash clothes, the then 15-year-old found her 37-year-old mother, Marsha Peters, dead from a heart attack. Peters had to grow up quickly, and nearly seven years on, she is a Miss Bahamas Contestant, competing as Miss New Providence.

She was motivated by Chantel O’Brien’s top 10 finish at the 2021 Miss Universe Pageant. Peters’ platform: Embracing the Entrepreneur.

Her pageant experience has had a major influence on her.

Peters describes herself as a foodie, and considers herself an omnivert. She’s a cosmetology student at BTVI, and she aspires to study medicine. Specifically, she wants to become an OBGYN after researching how black women are treated in hospitals.

Peters isn’t just inspired by her late mother, but also by her father, RBPF Press Liaison Officer Supt. Audley Peters. His nickname for her is magic, and nobody else is allowed to call her that.

Peters and her fellow pageant sisters are hard at work preparing for the pageant’s grand finale, set for July 31st at the Atlantis showroom.

And, while Peters was heartbroken by her mother’s death, she says the experience molded her into the woman she is today.
