THE BAHAMAS – The bloodshed started early in the year.
On February 22, a chilling early-morning shooting on Dunmore Street was caught on camera, showing multiple gunmen unloading dozens of bullets into a parked car, killing a young father in front of his daughter.
Boat captain and mechanic Quintero Arnett was left slumped in the driver’s seat of his car. Shocking surveillance video showed his 4-year-old daughter running from the car as gunmen closed in.
At the scene, a local minister and family friend said Arnett was a family man.
Arlene Anderson – Resident and local minister
“Very focused young … the way he died.”
Less than a month later, on March 11, a marina employee cleaning debris from the water made a gruesome discovery when a fetus was found floating inside a plastic bag.
Then on June 14, Father’s Day, shock and confusion unfolded at the Palmdale Shopping Center when Police Reserve Inspector Lernex Williams and another man were shot and killed during a deadly armed robbery.
At the scene, Williams’ nephew expressed his grief and noted that although one suspect lost his life, he did not see it as justice.
Leshard Stovel – Nephew of Lernex Williams
“I wish it never happened. I wish everyone was still living and living their life. I don’t wish death on nobody, and you know you don’t suppose to do eye for an eye, but no, ain’t no justice in that.”
Fast forward to October 22, a desperate two-day search for 30-year-old Lauren Saunders ended in tragedy.
The 7-month-pregnant mother’s body was found in bushes off Munnings Drive.
On November 19, which was her birthday, Saunders’ family held a candlelight vigil in her memory.
Her sister described the pain the family lives with every day.
Charmaine Edgecombe – Sister of Lauren Saunders
“There’s a hole in our heart. This, this, this fresh, just, and then I can’t even focus. We can’t focus, all of us can’t focus. My brother silently don’t even, he barely even speak, you know? But it’s hurt. It is hurtful.”
Just five days after Saunders’ body was found, on October 27, another shocking discovery was made off Marshall Road.
A newborn baby was found alive in bushes, the umbilical cord still attached. A local resident heard what he thought was a stray animal crying.
A father of three described the moment he realized it was not a cat, but a baby.
Acharro Gaitor – Good Samaritan
“It sounded like a cat, right? But you know, being a father of three, I know what a baby sounds like. And I just went and started to kind of push the bush away and discovered that there were a baby, literally in the bushes with the umbilical cord still attached to the body and wrapped around the neck.”
The shocking nature of these crimes has left families shattered and communities in mourning. As the country heads into another year, many are hoping the trend moves downward in 2026.
