NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Nassau Cruise Port CEO Mike Maura says while the global increase in COVID cases is concerning, he doesn’t foresee the industry shutting down again like it did last year.

Kyle Walkine reports.

With the global cruise ship industry under the microscope yet again as more and more ships confirm COVID cases on board, concerns of a possible shutdown of the industry have re-emerged.

However, Nassau Cruise Port CEO Mike Maura says when it comes to The Bahamas the likelihood of a shutdown of the industry is slim as even when there are cases confirmed on ships once they arrived At Nassau Harbour, mitigation steps are immediately implemented.

Maura says the cruise industry in The Bahamas is booming with 2022 bookings already higher than 2019-pre COVID. When the industry reopened, cruise ships made it mandatory for all crew members and passengers to be vaccinated, except children under the age range for vaccination.

Maura said despite the increase in cases, cruise ship arrivals in The Bahamas remain high.
