NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Disaster Risk Management Authority has been fully activated as its team closely tracks Hurricane Oscar.

The storm, which rapidly intensified overnight Friday, had only a 20 percent chance of development but grew stronger quickly.

Acting Director of The Bahamas Department of Meteorology, Jeffrey Simmons, addressed the media Saturday evening during a briefing at the Disaster Risk Management Authority.

And according to Simmons, once the system passes over Inagua, Oscar is forecast to move into the south west coast of Cuba.

As for how government is positioning the country to respond, acting Prime Minister Chester Cooper says preparation is underway.

Meanwhile, with Hurricane Oscar’s rapid intensification putting the Southeast Bahamas on alert, DRMA Managing Director Aaron Sergeant acknowledges the limited time for preparations.

However, he assured residents all incident command centers on the affected islands are fully operational and ready to respond.
