UNITED STATES – A U.S. judge has sentenced Ryan Routh to life in prison for attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump at a Florida golf course during the 2024 campaign.

A jury found the 59-year-old guilty of aiming a rifle through a fence at Trump, while he was golfing at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach.

Prosecutors say a U.S. Secret service agent spotted Routh and opened fire, prompting him to flee before he could shoot.

Routh was also convicted on multiple federal charges, including weapons offenses and impeding a federal agent.

Courtroom drama followed the verdict, as Routh tried to harm himself with a pen and had to be restrained.

Routh represented himself at trial, after firing his attorneys and pleading not guilty.
