NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Opposition Leader Michael Pintard blasted Prime Minister Philip Davis’ most recent position on the hot button-topic of marital rape.

Davis telling reporters on Monday that a solution to spousal rape would be divorce.

He also said criminalizing marital rape was not a priority listed in the Davis’ pre-administration “Blueprint for Change.”

Before Monday’s comments, Davis had gone on record stating that “Rape is Rape” no matter the circumstance.

Pintard says now is not the time for flip-flopping. In 2022 the government drafted a bill that would criminalize marital rape. It was slated to be tabled in Parliament by the end of 2023, however parliament prorogued.

The protection against violence bill was later passed. Some, including The Bahamas Crisis Center, are calling for the definition of “rape” to be changed on the books.

Pintard says Davis’ opinion needs to reflect a clear position.
