NASSAU, BAHAMAS – One day after the government tabled an Anti-Gang Bill, former National Security Minister Marvin Dames says the government hasn’t been successful in their fight to get crime under control.

He insists the crime fight requires a solution that brings the country together.

Dames’ comments come as the country marks 37 homicides for the year.

2024 had a bloody start with a spate of murder for the first two months.

Dames who served in the former Minnis Administration says it’s not a police problem.

The prime minister released an anti-gang plan which saw the release of that bill on Wednesday. The bill levies a $100,000 fine or a 25-year prison sentence for anyone convicted of gang-related crimes.

The police also released a plan which among other things saw increased saturation patrol in hot spot areas.

However, the former national security minister believes there’s a need for proactive measures.

Despite these efforts, Dames maintains the fear of crime hasn’t subsided.
