NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Former North Abaco Member of Parliament Darren Henfield is voicing his frustration over the lack of progress in his hometown, criticizing the Davis administration for its slow recovery efforts in Abaco and Grand Bahama following Hurricane Dorian.

Darren Henfield – Former Minister, Foreign Affairs
“I go across Abaco every time I visit home and I visit home often and ask people what has happened, even though I can see that the government has done absolutely nothing to help and assist the recovery of Abaco and Grand Bahama post-Hurricane Dorian.”

Henfield, who lost his seat to Kirk Cornish in the 2021 snap election, highlighted several unfinished projects that were initiated during his tenure, including a hurricane shelter and homes that were supposed to be built for residents in North Abaco.

Darren Henfield – Former Minister, Foreign Affairs
“We left in place money to build a proper hurricane shelter where we got one million dollars, as foreign minister I got one million dollars from the Kingdom of India which was facilitated through the United Nations to build that shelter. We saw the roof of it ironically collapse, thank God no one was in it and we don’t know where we are with that.”

Henfield also criticized the ongoing neglect of critical infrastructure, such as the Leonard A. Thompson International Airport and the roads in the area.

Darren Henfield – Former Minister, Foreign Affairs
“There are docks that need to be repaired. There is the Leonard A. Thompson International Airport when you come into, it still looks like a war zone because you can still see derelict buildings around it. There are verges of the road along the highway, Sherlin Bootle Highway, Earnestine Highway that are not being attended to. Potholes are replete all across the place.”
