GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – After battering the island of Abaco, leaving unprecedented damage and destruction, Hurricane Dorian then moved to Grand Bahama ripping down homes and businesses in just seconds.

It was a terrifying experience for George and Sissel Johnson as the East Grand Bahama residents and owners of the old Free Town farm fought for their lives during Hurricane Dorian.

The threat of the hurricane was not a major concern for the couple that has weathered numerous storms in their lifetime.

The two and their mother kept sheltered in their home as water levels continued to rise.

After being stuck for days hunger set in, that’s when George says he saw their fridge floating near the attic.

Days passed and the water started to recede then came the sounds of airplanes and vehicles.

And help surely came; the family was rescued and had to seek immediate medical attention.

Four years later, the couple recently moved back into their home.

And while they lost many of their animals and most of the farm, they say they can still find reasons to smile as they focus on rebuilding.

The couple sharing how the devastating storm showed them the importance of community.
