GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – Residents on Grand Bahama are up in arms over recent power bills, claiming a significant increase in recent months. Now the power company says there’s been no rate adjustment, but Italia Hall reports residents are calling on the powers that be to have some leniency.

Tensions are rising among some Grand Bahamians who say it’s costing too much to keep the lights on. Customers of Grand Bahama Power Company claim their most recent bills are unusually high and are now draining their pockets. This resident says it’s been challenging for him and his business.

Benjamin Sands is of a different view. He shares how it’s become an annual expectation to see an increase in his bill each summer. But for Grand Bahama resident Simeon Outten, who lives near the Casuarina Bridge, the high cost of electricity is a major concern, claiming his bill has doubled in cost.

Outten adds this is the first time he’s received a bill this high.

GBPC Chief Operations Officer Nikita Mullings told Our News the company is aware of the concerns from residents but says there has been no rate adjustment. She encourages customers to purchase energy-efficient appliances and visit GBPC’s social media pages or website for more information.
