NASSAU, BAHAMAS – With more than $15 million already invested, the new Golden Yolk egg production project is a part of a push for food security.

They’re hoping to make a dent in food imports by taking Bahamian egg production from 750,000 to 27 million eggs annually.

Agriculture Minister Clay Sweeting says contracting farmers has already been shown to be successful in the region.

According to the project’s informational video, the seven new poultry houses on New Providence and 38 on the Family Islands are built to withstand more extreme weather patterns like hurricanes and higher temperatures.

Poultry Technical Services was contracted by the government to help design the poultry houses.

Stuart Sterling, general manager explains things could be up and running by the end of 2023. If all goes well, The Bahamas could see local stores stocked with the all-Bahamian eggs by early next year.

The program promises to create 90 new direct jobs.

For farmers who are concerned about how this may impact the industry’s status quo, Sweeting says it’s simply a more holistic approach.
