NASSAU, BAHAMAS – As the world prepares to say farewell to one of the longest-serving leaders of our time, the future of the Commonwealth remains the center of great debate. In this exclusive interview with our Marlena Leonard, the new British High Commissioner to The Bahamas speaks about the death of the late Queen Elizabeth II, her successor King Charles III and the future of the Commonwealth of Nations.

Thomas Hartley is new to his position, only taking on the role of British High Commissioner four weeks ago, and he says while he spent his first two weeks getting to know The Bahamas, the past week has been consumed by the loss of the Britain’s longest reigning monarch, champion of the Commonwealth, Queen Elizabeth II.

And, with heated conversations surrounding the future of some Commonwealth realms’ connection to the British Monarchy, Hartley saying the amount of discourse about the Commonwealth has been amazing.

When asked about King Charles II, the British High Commissioner praised his work ethic, dedication to the public service, and his belief in the possibility for Commonwealth relationships with the monarch to peacefully evolve.
