HONDURAS – Special mosquitoes are being bred in Honduras to fight dengue fever.

The Honduran Ministry of Health, the World Mosquito Program, and the National Autonomous University of Honduras are partnering with local communities to implement innovative public health strategies to reduce not only dengue but also zika and chikungunya.

A part of the program includes releasing aedes aegypti mosquitoes carrying a natural bacteria, which reduces mosquitoes’ ability to transmit arboviruses.

Dengue fever has become a pressing problem for Honduras in recent years, where more than 10,000 people are known to be sickened by dengue each year.
