NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The immigration minister stressing there must remain a stringent process for granting citizenship.

His comments follow those of Chief Justice Sir Ian Winder who said requiring people born in The Bahamas to foreign parents to live on the outside of their own society is a recipe for social discontent.

Immigration Minister Keith Bell is defending the process.

Sir Ian said there’s absolutely no lawful justification for why these applications ought to take years and in some cases decades to be processed.

But it seems Bell is of a different view. He says there’s also been several instances of fraud.

Children born in The Bahamas to non-Bahamian parents have to wait until their 18th birthday to apply for citizenship.

Bell also hit back at those who say government should be given a timeline to respond to citizenship applications.
