CONNECTICUT, USA – Jonquel Jones is on the WNBA finals for the second straight year.

The Grand Bahama-born post player put the New York Liberty on her back, scoring 25 points, grabbing 15 rebounds and anchoring the interior to the tune of 4 blocks to power her team to a 87-84 win over the team she took to the finals last year, the Connecticut Sun.

The game was a battle of wills with both teams trading leads deep into the 4th quarter. JJ made a clutch three-pointer with 3:26 in the fourth to put the Liberty up by two points.

She would add a pair of clutch free throws in the last minute of the game to put the nails in her former team’s coffin.

JJ’s points came on 7-14 shooting but she feasted at the line going 9-12.

Breanna Stewart led the team in scoring with 27 points. She added 9 rebounds and Betnija Laney added 21 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists. Alyssa Thomas had a triple-double to keep the sun in the game with 17 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists but it was not enough to overcome the potent inside-out threat of Jones and Stewart.
Jones will play the Las Vegas Aces in the finals in a best-of-five series beginning Sunday, October 8th. She played in the finals last year against the Aces as well with the Sun, losing and suffering a foot fracture, allowing Aces forward Aja Wilson to run roughshod over them. Jones and the Liberty are 2-2 this season against the Aces this season.
