NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Gender based violence has been a hot topic throughout 2023.

Wednesday night was no different as the graduate chapter of Delta Sigma Theta held a panel discussion on the issue featuring a well known women’s advocate and one of the country’s youngest female magistrates.

If you were to ask Magistrate Ian-Marie Darville-Miller what one of the root causes for gender based violence is in the country, she would say the lack of education.

And well-known women’s advocate Marisa Mason-Smith agreed. She also says there has been a shift in the type woman being impacted by such crimes.

The ladies appeared on a panel Wednesday hosted by The Bahamas Chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority on the topic – The Advancement of Women’s Legal Rights in The Bahamas.

And while Mason-Smith believes part of the solution is to build more safe houses, there is still another issue.

Magistrate Darville-Miller also believes their needs to be a shift in the mindset.Overall, both women feel a lot of progress has been made protecting women and children in the country but there is still more that has to be done.
