NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A video circulating shows a woman exiting a Carmichael Road business, where seconds later, her day goes terribly wrong.

A jeep pulls up, and a gunman jumps out snatching her purse.

What follows is a struggle between the pair as the gunman makes his way to his getaway car that’s carrying the second suspect – a black Suzuki jeep bearing red government plates.

The woman then limps back inside the store, where we would later learn she’d been shot in the leg.

However, that’s not the only thing that would be later revealed.

On the sidelines of a press conference on countering illicit trafficking in the region Monday morning, Royal Bahamas Defence Force Commodore, Floyd Moxey, told reporters that one of the robbery suspects who was later nabbed by police is a member of the defence force.

“I understand that this marine was on a 2-month sick leave, and staff intelligence officer is checking this out. We will have all the details later.”

Officer in Charge of Crime, Assistant Commissioner Anton Rahming, says the marine was one of two suspects captured just minutes after the crime was reported to police.

“They were alerted to persons in the area of Cowpen Road. While in that area, they were able to take into custody two individuals, one being the defence force officer that you were just briefed on, along with another young male.”

“But we do know that that plate was a plate not in active circulation. It seems to be an old plate from a vehicle that may have been used just for that purpose.”

The arrest has prompted questions concerning vetting by the armed forces.

Commodore Moxey tells reporters that they do all they can to ensure those chosen to serve are properly vetted.

“There are times one or two fall through the crack. We have close to 2000 marines that are disciplined and are serving this country. [They] are doing a great job in moving the defense force forward.”
