GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – Fire crews on Grand Bahama worked tirelessly late into the night as a massive blaze raged in the Lucaya area.

Residents watched in fear as the fire crept close to their homes.

One visitor from the United States was determined to help and joined efforts to keep the flames at bay.

The fire erupted on Monday afternoon with reports pouring into the Our News newsroom about a fast moving blaze in the midshipman road area on Grand Bahama.

For many residents, it was a terrifying sight, some homes stood just yards away.

Our News’ cameraman Dave Mackey, captured exclusive footage of the intense smoke which covered the roads, making visibility nearly impossible.

Power services on the island were affected Monday night and by morning, downed streetlights and power lines obstructed some roadways.

We visited diamonds by the sea, a small ocean front community across from club fortuna, where we got an inside look at how the fire threatened the property.

The owner took us on an exclusive tour, showing the damage and close call they experienced.

Among those caught in the chaos was U.S visitor Tony Bougere and his wife, who was staying at diamonds by the sea when the fire broke out.

Bougere said fire crews acted swiftly and commended them for their efforts.

However, he wasn’t content to just stand by, he and others took matters into their own hands.

By Monday evening, police confirmed that no homes were directly threatened and the fire was successfully contained.
