“After this is over, I will have to deal with all the hurt. I wanted to go to Burger King, and I couldn’t go. I’ve been getting death threats on the phone till the police had to escort me. Y’all have to fix this.”

That was the emotional plea from Mervie Knowles, owner of A Home Away from Home, as she, her son, and others gathered outside the home of Ingrid Carey.

The issue escalated after Philippa Carey publicly revealed that her grandmother, whom she calls “Mom,” had transferred ownership of her home, power of attorney, and other benefits to Knowles. The family claims that Ingrid Carey now suffers from dementia.

Initially, Knowles said she had no plans to return the home to the Carey family. However, she later changed her position.

“I came to a conclusion to actually give back the home to Ms. Ingrid. It wasn’t a hard decision; I just wanted to follow what she wanted me to do. She blessed me with the home to do the mission work, and that’s what the home really was for. But I came to the conclusion to give it back to her because of what they’ve been doing—saying awful things about me, trying to destroy my character.”

Knowles emphasized that her decision was made to prevent further harm to those she cares about, maintaining that she was never at fault.

“They really have to apologize because even after looking at all the documents and hearing my story, they realize that I was not at fault. I was only following a woman’s wish. They just asked me about the light and the water—I said I never changed no name.”

Ingrid Carey was removed from A Home Away from Home and placed in the care of her family and another facility.

“I humbly stand here today as a peacemaker, solidifying that the families have come together in unity. We’re moving forward; we dispel all the negative things in the atmosphere regarding the matter. However, we are working cohesively together so we can move forward from this.”
