HOUSTON, TEXAS -As you can there’s an intense practice going on behind me on day two of training camp for the senior men’s national team.
While the focus is on the court and Team Bahamas’ roster construction, a group of young coaches with the national team continue to move into new positions at the NCAA level.
Mikhail McLean headlines that group, after recently being named an assistant head coach for the Kentucky Wildcats.
McLean previously worked as the assistant director of player development for the Houston Cougars and as an assistant coach for Lamar University.
At the national team level, McLean has also joined the sidelines as an assistant coach with the senior men.
Team Bahamas has two more practices here in Houston and on Friday they travel to Athens, Greece for their friendly tournament before the Olympic qualifiers.
Tennis
Team Bahamas got off to a first start but ultimately lost their first matchup at the latest Davis Cup tie in Paraguay.
The team fell 2 matches to 1 against Costa Rica in America Zone 2 play at the international tennis club in Asuncion, Paraguay.
In singles, Michael Major Jr. had a successful Davis Cup debut with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Rodrigo Piedra.
In singles match two, Justin Roberts lost in three sets to Christian Winstead 7-5, 6-4, 7-6.
Costa Rica clinched the match in doubles when Roberts and Denali Nottage lost 6-0, 6-2 to Piedra and Paulo Pocasangre.
Coached by Ricardo Demeritte, Team Bahamas also includes Rodney Carey Jr. and Donte Armbrister.
Track & Field
Denisha Cartwright wins more accolades with another national award.
The Minnesota State University grad was named the Division II Honda Athlete of The Year.
Cartwright will be honored at the collegiate women sports awards in a live telecast on CBS Sports Network June 24, at 7 pm in New York city.
Most recently, cartwright was named the 2024 United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) division ii outdoor track and field national athlete of the year.
She concluded her Mavericks career with eight NCAA Championship titles in both indoor and outdoor, 16 top-three national event finishes and an NCAA Division II record.
Overall, she is a 30-time all-America honoree and holds the division ii all-time record in the 60-meter hurdles.
WNBA
It was a WNBA record-setting night from beyond the arch but Jonquel Jones and the New York Liberty saw their eight-game win streak come to an end.
Jones finished with 17 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists in the Liberty’s 99-93 loss to the Phoenix Mercury Monday night at the Footprint Center in Phoenix.
The teams combined for a WNBA record 33 made three pointers, and the Liberty tied their franchise record with 18 made.
The Mercury outscored the Liberty 30-17 in the fourth quarter to pull ahead for good.
New York fell to 12-3 while Phoenix improved to 8-7.
