Mom Becomes First-Time Home Owner After 21 Year Journey

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Butler, along with 11 others, got the keys to their very own homes in Carmichael’s Renaissance Subdivision.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – It’s been 21 years of trying to do this. I set at goal from I was 20 knowing what I wanted. Knowing that one day I wanted kids and would want my kids to have their own bedroom, their own home, their own yard, and from since then, from since setting that goal I set out to pursue that,” says Barricka butler – New Home Owner Renaissance Subdivision

And on Thursday afternoon, that dream came true as Butler, along with 11 others, got the keys to their very own homes in Carmichael’s Renaissance Subdivision.

Housing Minister Keith bell says there’s more work to be done.

“Today we gave out 12 homes but this is a 300, when the subdivision is completed, there will be 300 homes. So far we are approximately 50 homes but you can see there’s construction going on over to the west, over to the east, and over to the north. And so there’s a number of homes which are currently being constructed and over the next year you will see a number of homes that will be presented, they’re at various stages,” says Keith Bell – Minister Of Housing

Butler says she has been visiting the house to get comfortable with it, and recently brought her 17-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter to see the home.

“I started the process and did everything as a surprise, so they didn’t know anything until finally I brought them here. And when I did, my son didn’t know whose house he was visiting, so when he did find out, I’m like what do you think? I’m just happy I got my own room! So that was nice,” says Barricka Butler – New Home Owner Renaissance Subdivision

“Decorating, decorating. I’m gonna decorate. Allowing my kids to pick their own wall color do their own thing, it’s not just my home, it’s our home. Also my husband- like I said it’s not just my home it’s our home, so he’s gonna do his thing as well. His gardening, his man cave, whatever he wants to do,” says butler

And she had this message for those still on the path, urging them to never give up.

”Prepare for it, like the saying goes, if you stay ready you don’t have to get ready. So always have your funds, be prepared for whenever they call, they can call you at any time,” says Butler
