NASSAU, BAHAMAS – An estimated $1.5 million in backpay still owed to Bahamas Union of Teachers members, according to BUT President Belinda Wilson.

The union president says teachers are the heartbeat of the country’s education system, which is why it is important for the government to ensure that teachers’ needs are met.

As experts are predicting a global recession next year, it is unclear how teachers will be able to cope with smaller salaries, and the increasing cost of living.
