NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A 41-year-old mother has denied criminal responsibility in the drowning death of her 11-year-old son.

Stephanie Hanna, a maid of Exuma Street, could face up to two years in prison if convicted of cruelty to children the drowning death of Gerodo Taylor Jr.

Children swimming in a pond near the Golf Academy found the teen’s body around 5pm on August 2nd. However, his identity remained unknown for two days, as no one claimed his body or filed a missing person’s report until August 4th.

Hanna denied two counts of cruelty to children at her arraignment before Assistant Chief Magistrate Subusola Swain.

Prosecutors allege that Hanna neglected her son on August 1st and allowed him to be in a yard with a body of water that was not sufficiently protected to guard against drowning.

She was granted $7,000 bail and will return to court for trial on November 14th.
