Nursing Home Needs Help With GB Power Rates

GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – The owner of Burrows Home of the Aged says the home is struggling to pay their power bill since the Grand Bahama Power Company implemented an average base rate increase and a fuel charge hike on customers in 2022.

The residents at Burrows Home for the Aged in Grand Bahama were enjoying some time outside when Our News interviewed the home’s owner, Irene Burrows, about the operation of the home.

Although residents are happy, Irene says it’s harder than it looks to keep the home running-

Burrows explains the reason behind the power consumption, is the need to do multiple loads of laundry a day for their 15 live-in residents clothing and bedding.

When asked what the public can do to help, Burrows suggests helping by going to the power company and contributing to their power bill, or helping to fundraise for solar panels to power their laundry machines.

The home relies largely on the donations and support of private donors and organizations, like the Grand Bahama Port Authority, the Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs, but with the rising cost of utilities and inflation hitting grocery store shelves, Burrows says what they also need is a government grant.
