NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A disturbing revelation by the North Abaco Member of Parliament Kirk Cornish reveals that more than 260 structures were built in two shanty towns in Abaco.

Cornish said the count was done days ago by officials from the Ministry of Works and Utilities.

It was recently revealed that the farm shantytown grew by an estimated 200 acres since Hurricane Dorian back in 2019.

Since the monster storm decimated The Mudd and Pigeon Pea shantytowns, officials say a new shantytown was formed off S.C Bootle Highway.

Works and Utilities Minister Alfred Sears was also on hand explained that an application will be made to the supreme court to address the matter.

Sears did not say if the application will include demolishing structures.

Cornish says Abaconians feel the circumstances surrounding shantytowns are unfair.

Central and South Abaco Member of Parliament John Pinder recently told a local daily that the shanty town issue was out of control. He also expressed concern about crime in these areas.

National Security Minister Wayne Munroe was asked if there would be an increase in law enforcement in these area. His response? The matter is actively being considered.
