NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The prime minister giving differing responses on if the government would consider amending the laws relating to abortion in instances of rape.

When asked, Prime Minister Philip Davis says the law is clear on the matter.

The issue was raised following an incident where and 11-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by her mother’s boyfriend

It’s alleged that her mother gave the pre-teen abortion pills to get rid of the pregnancy.

The 40-year-old woman has since been charged.

However, when pressed on the matter again by reporters, Davis called the issue a medical matter and a personal choice.

Section 313 of the Penal Code says abortion is justifiable in circumstances where an unborn child dies while its mother is receiving medical or surgical treatment not intended to cause an abortion, miscarriage, premature delivery or the death of the child.

We put this prime minister’s comments to former health minister and Free National Movement Chairman dr. Duane Sands.
