One of the first people on the scene was Yellow Elder resident Joy Culmer, who says she assisted police in getting to the area.

She says the boy’s body was discovered not too far away from her home.

Shocked residents who gathered at the scene showed Our News team the area they say is frequently used by local children to access the pond.

According to Police Press Liasion Officer, Chief Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings, a group of children found the boy partially submerged in the pond on the grounds of the Oakesfield Sports Center Golf Academy.

Skippings says the child, who they believed to be between the age of 10 and 12 years-old, was found in boxer briefs and is believed to have been there for at least 24 hours.

This is not the first time a child has drowned in the area, in October 2011, a 10-year-old boy drowned while swimming with a friend at the nearby Baillou Hills playing field.

Now, area residents are left to wonder how it could happen again. Eula Butterfield says she’s constantly trying to deter neighborhood kids from the area.

She doesn’t believe the child is from the Yellow Elder community.
