Police: We Try to Keep Suspects Alive

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Police are trying to keep defendants alive while they are out on bail, according to Acting Police Commissioner Clayton Fernander, who today explained to reporters, that sometimes the defendants end up before the courts or dead, while out on bail.

At Cabinet this week, National Security Minister Wayne Munroe expressed concern over the number of individuals on bail who wound up dead. Fernander says he supports Munroe’s concerns, as police work on the investigation into those deaths.

Back in March, a leaked police briefing pulled the curtain back on investigations into gang warfare in New Providence.

Attorney General Ryan Pinder has indicated the government’s intent to bring specific anti-gang legislation that would address gang behavior and membership.

Fernander says the legislation is still being discussed.
