GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – Grand Bahama knows the power of storms all too well, and with hurricane season in full swing, the focus is on preparation.

From trimming trees to securing homes, hurricane prep can feel rushed, but city leaders say planning doesn’t have to wait for the first warning.

Troy McIntosh – City Manager, GBPA:
“Preparedness isn’t just for June first; it’s something you work on all summer, or even year-round, by removing loose debris and keeping your property safe.”

McIntosh says lessons from Hurricane Dorian revealed that many residents weren’t fully aware of their legal addresses, which are critical for power restoration, inspections, and city services. Education now also covers insurance policies, water storage, and other essential preparedness steps.

Troy McIntosh – City Manager, GBPA:
“Do you have five gallons of water per person in your home? Many don’t. Education and proper tools are key, and it’s about not waiting until the last minute.”

McIntosh adds that shifting the culture of hurricane preparedness will take constant repetition, like a catchy jingle, to keep readiness top of mind all year long.
