NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Alpheus “Hawk” Finlayson was a track lifer. A standout track and field athlete at Saint Augustine’s College before matriculating to St. John’s University in his early years, he eventually returned home where he would make a monumental impact on the sport.

Hawk served as president of the Bahamas Amateur Athletics Association from 1989-1997.

Under his watch The Bahamas became a track and field powerhouse, winning its first Olympic medals in track and field.

He also represented The Bahamas on a global stage as an executive serving as vice president of the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association and becoming the first Bahamian to sit on the IAAF council.

Finlayson left an indelible mark on Bahamian and World Athletics, and his name will forever be associated with the Bahamian tradition of excellence on the track.
