NASSAU, BAHAMAS – News that the veteran politician and legendary broadcaster died prompted reaction Monday from Obie Wilchcombe’s political colleagues, who flew to Grand Bahama Monday morning where they met with his family and members of his constituency. 

Among them was Prime Minister Philip Davis who held an emotional press conference in Grand Bahama. 

Scores of residents filled the Progressive Liberal Party headquarters in Grand Bahama Monday morning following news that longtime Member of Parliament Obie Wilchcombe had died.

Prime Minister Philip Davis addressed those in attendance, noting that Wilchcombe served with great distinction as the MP for West Grand Bahama and Bimini and Minister of Social Services and Urban Renewal before a recent addition to his portfolio as minister of information and broadcasting.

Davis recalls meeting Wilchcombe in the 1970’s. During the time of his career as a journalist at the Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas which he began in 1975.

Over 25 years, Wilchcombe climbed through the ranks, holding various positions including deputy director of news, news director, and assistant general manager.

Davis notes that through his parents, Wilchcombe became deeply rooted in the PLP, and formally joining politics in 1994.

He wore many hats in his political career holding titles like party chairman, senator, cabinet minister and leader of government business in the house.

The nation’s leader added that Wilchcombe’s contribution to the development of the country was exemplary, as he was also known for bringing the film industry to The Bahamas.
