NASSAU, BAHAMAS – An expectant mother is behind bars awaiting sentencing for physically abusing her four-year-old daughter before she was murdered.

Ostonya Walker, the mother of murder victim D’onya “Bella” Walker, pleaded guilty on Monday to charges of child cruelty and exposing a child to grievous harm.

Prosecutors say Walker and her live-in boyfriend Darion Smith physically abused the toddler before she died on November 5, 2021.

Bella was left in Smith’s care while her mother was at work when she died.

Smith pleaded guilty to her murder and was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Monday as part of a plea deal.

Walker pleaded guilty without knowing what sentence the court will impose.

Public defender Dorsey McPhee has requested a probation report to assist Justice McKay in deciding a sentence.

McPhee and the prosecutor Cassie Bethell will make sentencing submissions on March 1.

According to McPhee, Walker is due to give birth the same month.
