NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Prime Minister Philip Davis, in a national statement this afternoon, providing key updates as it relates to protecting the country’s borders amidst Haiti’s ongoing crisis.

The prime minister acknowledging that armed gangs in Haiti have attacked critical infrastructure there, and there has been a collapse of law and order in many areas of the country. To this end, he notes the significant investments made in the Royal Bahamas Defence Force, from increased manpower to additional vessels and new technology and equipment.

The prime minister says these collaborative efforts have already proved successful, intercepting a number of vessels originating from Haiti. He emphasizes that the repatriation of individuals will be conducted in a manner that prioritizes the safety of our officers and respects the human rights and dignity of the passengers.

Now while Bahamians may be divided on whether or not now is the right time to send Bahamian Defence Force officers to Haiti, Prime Minister Davis says this would not be the first time.

Noting that under Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham, Bahamian officers participated in a mission to uphold security in Haiti, in 1994.
